High Altitude Agriculture

Above 2,500m in the unforgiving environment of the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, it is almost impossible to grow anything other than root vegetables. However, with the aid of a greenhouse families and communities are able to grow nutritious fresh vegetables supporting health and livelihoods. Operation Mercy works with schools and individual farmers to support them is setting up successful high altitude greenhouse operations. We also help them tackle other needs that they have expressed to us such as livestock health and nutrition as well as maximising the production of their field crops.

Orchard Improvement and Fruit Processing

Apples originated in the mountains of Central Asia. Working hand in hand with local fruit growers, Operation Mercy is seeking to see an increase in quantity, quality and utility of fruit grown here. As well as practical trainings on orchard management that incorporates international best practice as well as local knowledge, we have supported the creation of a small business producing more than 16,000 litres of juice for the local market.
