In the remote villages of Tajikistan new education and ideas can be hard to come by. Access to schools and education is limited for village women and many spend the majority of their time near their homes. In order to increase awareness and to encourage the women to care for their own heath and that of future generations, Operation Mercy's team chose to take classes to the women. Now travelling to several villages each week, they hold women's health classes with groups of nurses and teenage girls in addition to village women, many of whom have children with disabilities.
Interest differs from village to village but enthusiasm for the classes grows with each visit. Attendees tell their neighbours and soon many come eager to join in and learn new information from the basic health lessons. With an average of 10 to 15 women in each class, 80 participants have now completed classes on nutrition and women's health. In addition about 1900 informative pregnancy calendars have been distributed.
