How insulin is made

The Operation Mercy community health project in Rudaki & Dushanbe is raising awareness and knowledge regarding nutrition, disease prevention, first aid, diabetes and maternal health information to empower Tajiks to lead healthier lives. Our main project currently is working with children with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Mary had the best glucose control at the camp, so we were sad to hear her mom say that Mary didn’t want to take her insulin because her teacher had told her that insulin was from pigs and therefore insulin was unclean. We explained that it was human insulin and encouraged her mom to investigate how it was made. We then looked on line and found various videos about how insulin is made.

When we had our follow-up meeting with children and parents in May 2018, we showed this video in Russian and the parents were very interested. Mary herself was not there but we sent a link of the video to her mom. We later phoned her mom, who reported that Mary’s blood glucose control is very good, and that Mary wants to study at the Medical Institute.

We have distributed DVDs including this video about "How insulin is made" and many more resources for patients and doctors to more than twenty endocrinologists so that they can use them to increase their own knowledge and educate their patients.
