Goal Setting Cleans up the Neighbourhood

Every Self Help Group (SHG) has a plan or a goal to work toward. Some of the SHGs make three month plans, six month plans and a more mature SHG can have a one year plan. Most of the SHGs meet their goals but sometimes they need to re-plan or postpone them.

The Shamshad SHG in the Kartenou area of Kabul made three plans: to clean up their roads; to install a water pump; and to have different courses for children's education. All the women sat together and discussed each problem. Finally, they decide to clean up the road as the first goal to achieve. In the beginning, one representative of the SHG talked with the neighbours who were not members of the SHG and discussed the problem and how to solve it. After that discussion they talked with the community leader and then contacted the district government office and explained the problems in the area. After a month, the district office sent a service cleaner to their area and delivered four new big trash bins. "Now we are making the plan to bring a water pump into the area. Our work is in progress and we will continue until we achieve our goal. We should always make plans in every aspect of our life," said all the members.
