Iran's central plateau is actually a tectonic plate. The geology is highly unstable, creating frequent earthquakes. Operation Mercy began working in Iran in response to the earthquake disaster in Qazvin in 2002, then in Bam in 2003. Since the major earthquake in Bam, Operation Mercy has distributed emergency kits and co-operated in a housing project for earthquake affected families.
Following this, in another earthquake hit area in the Persian Gulf, Operation Mercy carried out a needs assessment of several earthquake damaged villages and initiated a water supply project.
Operation Mercy remains ready to carry out further needs assessments and provide assistance where it has capacity.
